Kai Unger
I am a Berlin-based sound designer and film sound artist, working at the intersection of narrative, emotion, and sonic space.
After studying Audio Engineering at SAE Berlin and further specializing in Sound Design at Datenklang, I gradually shifted my focus toward the artistic and conceptual potential of film sound. Since 2013, I have been working in film production with a strong emphasis on the creative shaping of sound as an independent narrative layer.
My work centers on the development of distinct sonic concepts and the dramaturgical construction of sound worlds. I approach each project by asking how sound can deepen the emotional structure of a film — how it can reveal inner states, create tension, or subtly guide perception. Rather than functioning as a purely technical element, sound becomes a narrative force that shapes atmosphere, rhythm, and meaning.
From the earliest conceptual conversations with directors through to the final mix, I see the entire sonic process as a cohesive artistic journey. The final sound design and mix are not merely technical steps, but the culmination of a carefully developed sonic language that supports and expands the film's storytelling.
Based in Berlin, I work on feature films, short films, and series, creating immersive soundscapes that strengthen the cinematic experience and give each project its own distinct acoustic identity.
